After being exposed to different discipline in art, can you give your own definition of it?
Market Place
by: Joachim Pissarro
- Yes. The best definition that i could give is "Art as Reality" for it simply describes the different sides of Life, through happiness, sorrow, guilt, freedom, justice, love, politics, poverty and many more. All have their own meanings and point of view, some of them are visible enough to see and analyze, some are just fair enough but others seems to be hidden. All art can depict Reality if you'll only look intellectually and not literally, use your mind and heart not your eyes and touch to see the reality which is Art.
- This painting conveys Freedom in which you can see a bird flying in the meadows of the sky.
Justice
- This sketch of a woman with eyes wrapped in a cloth and holding a balancing scales is said to be the symbol of Justice. Some meanings can be through symbolism.
Love
- This seascape photography conveys Love which is visible to see. The heart shape is carved in the sand and photographed by a camera in an angular view.
Politics
- This sculpture conveys Politics (in Korea) for it uses a sculpture of soldiers to give meaning of political war between North and South Korea.
Of all the artworks that you have observed, what are the 3 artworks that has great impact in your life?
Cariton
by: Rodrigo R. Clapano
This painting by Rodrigo R. Clapano is generally imbued by poverty, secrecy and awareness that there are still people with families that are still living on cheap man-made vehicles called Cariton. If you will look closely, half of the cariton is shaped like a car but is covered. There are some persons that you may think that they are very happy with what they do, but deep inside of them is a cariton-living person in which the cariton is the symbolism of hardship, trials and problems. one great factor that this artwork has affected me is that, I am also a kind of person that you will usually see smiling and happy all the time but there are moments in my life that only i can understand so i tend to hide it for myself and not show it to others.
Spoliarium
by: Juan Luna
This painting of Juan Luna "Spoliarium" reminds me of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ have offered us during his time and still tends to penetrate me deep inside. Everytime I Look at this painting, I always look back to the sacrifices that my parents have given me in order for me to have a good life. And a lesson is given in this painting that, Sacrifice can also be a sacred action in which one has to have the courage of giving their own life, work and time, in order for the other one to have a better life.
Steal-Life
by: Salvador Corpuz-Sierra
This painting of a refrigerated world full of plastic materials is entitled "Steal-Life". It generally conveys the meaning of the word Global Warming in which the continued use of plastic materials will lead to the destruction of the Earth itself, It bothers me that now we're experiencing global warming, we still tend to continue using plastic materials and not knowing that we could destroy even our own home. Scientifically speaking, plastic material are made of harmful chemicals (when burned) combined all-together to form plastic and has a low decomposing process that can take a million years before decomposing completely. We use it daily like tupperwares, bottles, containers and more. not knowingly, some people tend to burn these plastic in a process called "SIGA" a filipino term for burning waste matter so that it will decompose much faster, the chemicals drawn before the process is released in the air and tends to pollute the air, resulting to a diffusion of the ozone layer. If these processes continues, our ozone layer will be nothing and the rays of the sun will burn us all to dust and will lead to the extinction of man. This painting affects me greatly, I have putted it last because, this is the most problem that needs action, I always see people doing this process of "SIGA" a lot, and it makes me mad and making me want to pour a jar of water on top of it so that the fire will burn out. I just hope that in the near future, mother nature will still be strong and never give up despite of the cruelty of man to nature.
Question #03:
Base on your experience in observing artwork in the national museum, how would you describe Filipino artistry?
5 Descriptions / Characteristics of Filipino Artistry (Acc. to me ^-^)
1. Informative
2. Persuasive
3. Authentic
4. Realistic
5. Nationalistic
Informative
Filipino art is indeed very much Informative because we Filipinos just love making information out of art or it's the other way around. In old times, there are no internet shop, nor E-mail and text messages to send information, the only medium for us to send information is to write a letter by using a quill dipped in Ink and a piece of paper. this is the old way of sending information. But now, we have e-mails, billboards, text and fax messages to send information. Some information are embedded in art itself.
Persuasive
Persuasion is also embedded in some filipino art, they make use of this type of artwork for political and empowering purpose so that there is emphasis for every thought.
zAuthentic
Authentic means Genuine and uniqueness and i thoroughly think that FIlipino art has this kind of quality. This picture (Left image) is showing a tattoo art made in form of tribal designs made in the Philippines and is very much authentic.
Realistic
Realism is very much and highly observed in some Filipino art, because it portrays real life and everyday leisure. This picture (Left image) portrays Filipino women and men gathering harvests in such manner that it can and is really happening in real life.
Nationalistic
Nationalism is very popular during these days, and is very much interesting to see, some nationalistic artists tend to incorporate the Philippine flag in their work of art so that it gives the meaning of Filipinism just like in this drawing (Left image).
Question #04:
Of all artwork that you have observed, what artwork best describes your personality?
Real-Time Connectivity
by: Arturo Sanchez
- This painting-sculpture describes me as myself for it has the mere qualities of being Family oriented, Growthful, Constellation-alike, and Down-to-earth.
- Family-oriented is a quality that filipinos have, being close to family members, especially your parents, for they are the only ones who truly understands you, I always have a picture of my parents in my phone for me to remember the hardships that they had experienced since my birth, and the sacrifices they have done for me to have a good education and life. They are one of the inspirational people that i truly admire. As you can see in the artwork above, the spheres resemble different people attached to each end of the branches of the center tree.
- Growthful is described also in the painting because, like a tree, it grows continuously, but in order for it to grow, it undergoes a process of trial and error. I associated myself in this painting because I always tend to do mistakes in life, Decisions and bad things that had happened to me. But for me to grow, I should be able to learn from those mistakes and making them a challenge instead of stopping on one branch to grow even more branches in order for me to gain success in Life.
- Constellation-alike is the term that i have given in this painting, because the spherical shapes in the painting looks just like stars in the sky, and some say that stars are symbols of goal and dream that came true. I associated this with myself because i have so many dreams and goals in life that i have to and would want to come true, and majority of those dreams are for me and my family's future.
- Down-to-Earth is what i gave to this painting because the materials that the painter had used are made from earth materials, and the first thing that came to my mind is being down-to-earth and being humble and having my feet always on the ground. In my opinion, being humble is a very polite way of making a progress in life, because majority of people who had a successful life is very down-to-earth.
End of Midterm Exam. =)
